Former FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's legal representative filed the answer acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the proceedings thrown out for multiple causes including that his defendant, a opponent of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was indicted shortly after Trump pressured his attorney general to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they intended to submit multiple motions to terminate the proceedings before a trial, arguing the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to handle the proceedings.

The former director's case was first overseen by the original attorney, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into a different opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

The former director seemed in positive mood as he entered the court on Wednesday, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was accompanied by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the Trump administration dismissed.

After listening to the court state his rights and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

The former director was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about several months into the former president's first term as president. At the moment, he was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Russia and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey triggered a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just days before the national vote that he was probing Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government claim James Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the upper house by stating he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to release to media organizations data about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also charge James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, obstruct and impede" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Via social media the former director shared to his Instagram after he was charged, he stated he was innocent and accused Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are costs to challenging the former president," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump published on social media demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, charge Mr Comey and other people.
