The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a college in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also reported to have written in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with results revealed on this week.

Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response unequivocally denied that any person appointed by the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The student stated that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.

The letter accused the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if the student were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
